Astral projection, or out-of-body-experience, is a phenomenon in which the consciousness of a living person separates from the physical body, sometimes “traveling” away from it—to other planes of reality, or to locations in familiar reality, where the traveler is able to witness real-time events as they take place. OOBE’s sometimes occur as the result of an accident; they can also happen during surgery, when the consciousness of a patient under anesthesia leaves the body, and is actually able to observe the surgery being performed. LSD, hashish and other drugs can also play a role in inducing an OOBE. There are some people for whom astral projection occurs naturally, without the use of any drug—and there are still others who learn to project by practicing certain techniques.
